Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal is a museum of folk arts. It also hosts puppet shows in its auditorium

Kathputli is a 1500 years old – string puppet art of RajasthanIndia, and is the most popular form of Indian puppetry. Being a string marionette, it is controlled by a single string that passes from the top of the puppet over the puppeteers.

Culture - Strings Attached

Some scholars believe Kathputli art tradition is more than thousands years old. One finds its reference in Rajasthani folk tales, ballads and sometimes even in folk songs. The tribes of Rajasthan have been performing this art from the ancient times and it has become an eternal part of Rajasthani culture and tradition. No village fair, no religious festival and no social gathering in Rajasthan can be complete without the Kathputlis.

Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal has preserved this art with collection of lots of puppets (even from the foreign lands) & musical instruments of Rajput-era

I missed this in Udaipur but I saw a similar one in Jaisalmer. It is an already dying folk tradition and perhaps these pictures here may become a important documentation of that tradition.

That’s the saddest part about “Kathputli”, it’s fading out in the age of 3D 🙂
However when i visited this Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal at Udaipur, I was amazed to see & read about how this institution has kept this Folk Art alive. It engages in a complete course giving training’s to become master of puppets not only in India but in many other countries as well.
